An Apple a Day ~

October 18, 2009

wrapped caramel apple

I’ve never been more wishful that an apple a day would actually keep the doctor away.  Type A influenza is spreading like wild through these parts and I can name the families that haven’t had someone on Tamiflu on one hand.  I am celebrating our good fortune  by making the consummate autumn treat ~ caramel apples.  I use the recipe from one of my very favorite cookbooks, Tartine ( named for and with recipes from the amazing San Francisco bakery).  We just sliced into the first one and the crunchy, tart Granny Smith was perfectly complimented by the sweet, smooth caramel.  Delicious.  I’m feeling better already (and I’m not even sick).

This one is all wrapped and tied with a polka dot ribbon for my wonderful friend Jennifer.  I placed a small plastic dessert plate in the bottom of the cellophane sack to keep the wrapping away from the caramel ~ reduces the chance of smudging.  I know she’s going to love this little treat!
